Artist in Residence - Phyllis Calvin Thomas
On exhibit February 4 – April 27, 2020
Phyllis Calvin Thomas is a Northern California oil and palette knife painter. She travels extensively and enjoys painting in locations around the country and internationally. She has studied under many of the incredibly talented artist/instructors working in the Bay Area. Camille Przewodek, Susan Wolf, and Joan Hoffmann were the most influential to her work. She also studied under numerous East Coast painters, including Tim Bell, Ned Mueller, Valerie Craig, and David Grafton.
Phyllis is predominantly a landscape and plein air painter, but greatly enjoys still life work and painting birds. She is known for her bold, colorful palette and thick texture created by the palette knife. Phyllis began as a rookie "en plein air" painter and from this she learned to paint quickly, decisively, and with the joy that painting in nature brings. In her studio she is busy, creating large painting from these smaller plein air pieces, with her students and her commissions. She is most proud of the commissioned six large paintings adorning the new American Ag/Credit Headquarters building in Santa Rosa. Her favorite and most frequent juried exhibitions are with the prestigious California Art Club in Southern California.
Phyllis Calvin Thomas was born and raised in the Midwest but has also lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Nashville, Tennessee. She currently resides in Petaluma, California with her husband and two poodles. Her studio is in the Old Hatchery Building on 7th Street. She travels annually to her adopted country, Portugal where she paints and shows her work at Corte Real Gallery on the southern coast.
